Welcome to my corner of the world, the place for:
DIY Home ideas, crafts & artisanal DIY Home décor
In my latest project, a continuation of the African Music series, I have tried to portray a representation of the Djembe Drum, in the form of Paper Dolls.
Doll No 1. Of the musical trio, is playing the DJEMBE DRUM.
Let's have a quick introduction to the wonderful history behind the DJEMBE DRUM:
The Djembe drum is about 400-800 years old and was created during the Malian Empire by the Mandé people The Djembe (West Africa) is a goblet-shaped drum, traditionally carved from a single piece of African hardwood and topped with an animal skin as a drumhead.
DJEMBE drums were used as a form of long-distance communication between tribes based far apart, and for storytelling and entertainment.
"Dje" means gather and "be" means everyone, which gave this drum - used in 'gathering calls' - their distinctive name. Traditionally, only those born into the djembe family would be allowed to play the djembe. Ancient belief is that the djembe drum contains: -the spirit of the tree from which it was made
-the spirit of the animal whose skin is played
-the spirit of the carver or the one who cut the tree and -the people who assemble the drum.
